In 1999, as Steve Jobs returned to Apple and Intel led the semiconductor industry, NVIDIA, a then little-known chip maker, debuted on the Nasdaq. Within three years, it joined the S&P 500, replacing Enron, and its stock soared over 1,600%, reaching a market value of about $8 billion. Despite the dot-com bubble burst, NVIDIA’s integration into gaming consoles like Xbox and PlayStation and its GeForce GPUs’ popularity among gamers led to its early success. Few predicted that NVIDIA would become the best-performing stock of the last quarter-century, with a total return of 591,078% since its IPO.<\/p>\n

The next six years were tough for NVIDIA. Its stock plummeted in 2008 due to the financial crisis, and a legal battle with Intel over licensing forced NVIDIA to exit a major market. In 2022, NVIDIA’s stock fell along with the rest of the tech sector due to rising interest rates and declining demand post-COVID boom. However, the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022 changed the game again. Although it took time for investors to realize how NVIDIA would benefit from the AI boom, interest in ChatGPT and other generative AI products eventually exploded, leading to unprecedented orders for NVIDIA’s chips. Despite a rocky ascent with three annual drops of 50% or more, NVIDIA’s focus on graphic chips and CEO Jensen Huang’s vision of “accelerated computing” paved its way to the top.
